B-HERO: Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines - Virtual - Nov/Dec 2025

Tuesday, November 18, 2025 (8:30 AM - 12:00 PM) (CST)

Description

This interactive training introduces participants to the Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG), a research-based approach developed by Dr. Dewey Cornell. Covering both Level 1 and Level 2 content, this session equips school-based teams with the knowledge and skills to implement an evidence-based threat assessment process that emphasizes early intervention, problem-solving, and violence prevention.

  • Level 1 provides an overview of school violence prevention, legal foundations, and the core components of CSTAG’s five-step decision tree. Participants will learn to distinguish transient from substantive threats and understand how to respond in a way that balances school safety with supportive interventions.
  • Level 2 offers deeper practice with real-world scenarios and case studies to reinforce learning and strengthen team-based applications. Participants will engage in guided group discussions to refine their decision-making skills and practice developing appropriate response plans using CSTAG protocols.

Ideal for school psychologists, administrators, counselors, SROs, and other members of multidisciplinary threat assessment teams, this session prepares attendees to move toward consistent, equitable, and effective threat assessment practices in their schools.

Objectives: Upon completion of this offering, participants will be able to...

  • Describe the foundational principles and five-step decision tree of the CSTAG model and explain how it differs from zero-tolerance and profiling approaches to school threat assessment.
  • Apply the CSTAG guidelines to analyze and respond to threatening student behavior through structured case studies and guided practice.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to assess, intervene, and monitor student threats using evidence-based strategies aligned with the CSTAG model.

How to Register your School Team for the CSTAG Training:

The learning and work of CSTAG MUST be done by a school team (at least 4 people). To register your team, email bhero.crea@k12.nd.us with the members of your team.
